Why Plant Redwoods?

Redwood Reforestation Program

In the early 1850’s, logging of old-growth Pacific Coast redwoods was on the rise and within 100 years 95% of these majestic giants were gone. The coast redwood (sequoia sempervirens) is a remarkable tree species. Naturally resistant to insects, fungus, rot and fire, coast redwoods can live more than 2,000 years and remain among the tallest trees on our planet. These trees communicate and support each other through shallow but widespread, intertwined root systems that promote distributed stability, tree sprouting, and nutrient exchange. As a coast redwood grows, it captures and stores carbon from the atmosphere. Given its natural resilience, and potential for long life and tremendous growth, a single, thriving coast redwood can sequester a staggering volume of carbon across many generations of human life. Carbon sequestration is vital to the global effort to mitigate climate change, and a redwood forest can sequester more carbon per acre than any other type of forest.

Support Redwood Reforestation.

Redwood Forest Foundation, Inc. (RFFI) currently plants upwards of 15,000 redwoods across California’s north coast 50,000-acre Usal Redwood Forest and among neighboring redwood region forests each year. Of the 200,000 redwoods planted since 2010, nearly half are planted with a dedication from a Plant a Redwood Now! donor. In addition to redwood reforestation, your tax-deductible donation supports RFFI’s community engagement activities, climate mitigation work, and the restoration of watershed ecosystems that provide critical habitat for salmon and endangered wildlife. The Plant a Redwood Now! program also supports regional tree planting professionals and Pacific Northwest nurseries that grow redwoods year-round from a locally sourced seedbank, ensuring proper planting of healthy, young redwoods suited to our forests.
